Lost in the World 15. Dancing Shoes (Bonus Track) Fort Worth’s Green River Ordinance has set the local bar higher with the release of their first LP in three years, Under Fire. The pop/rock album infuses their country roots in small detail, subtly reminding listeners of their hometown. The instruments seem carefully thought-out and delicately placed, right down to the harmonica. Together 12 years, their experience is spoken for through their precise lilt throughout the record, spiking and slowing in just the right places in order to establish each mood. Even the order of songs is intuitive, taking the listener through a winding journey of hard times, encouraging words, and an overall optimistic experience. With a sound similar to Train’s latest work (right down to Josh Jenkins’ vocals), GRO has found a balance between showcasing their zealous instrumentation and Jenkins’ confident chords. Even though the band has been adopted into the mainstream world -- they have toured with the Goo Goo Dolls, Bon Jovi and aforementioned Train -- their sound has not drifted to the overproduced style that can come with stardom. The bands' tracks are clean-cut and filled with forthright guitar work, beautiful harmonies, and storytelling worth envying. "Dark Night” opens the album with a booming harmony that grabs your attention, eventually dissolving into a fast beat and string grazing. The title track "Under Fire" is laid out with an underlying riff, which adds dimension and structure to the emotional lyrics: "Cause I’m under fire and I’m burning down slow. I’m walking on wire, won’t you let me go?” The layered vocals deliver added pain. A lot of the cuts do tend to slightly resemble one another, making it hard to pick out favorites or mood-changers from the pack. "Crawling” was one of the only songs that varied from the overall theme. It has an embedded yearning and softness that shies away from the ripping guitar segments they often use, instead employing crooning for the backup vocals. The guitar takes on a reverberated effect similar to Coldplay’s guitar use, arranging it as a side note rather than the spotlight. Hats off to the track list order: There’s a balance of up-tempo numbers and piano driven ballads throughout, with the slower tunes bringing up the rear. This is a strong way to send off listeners. They chose "Dancing Shoes” as the closer, which was pulled from their most recent acoustic EP, The Morning Passengers. This is the folksiest number on the record and will probably be one of the favorites.
